$128,050,000
That is a disgusting number. For football. It turns my stomach.
So many people in financial trouble. An auto industry about to go bankrupt. The average American being told to "dig a little deeper" for charities this year, yet there are millions being shelled out for college football teams to come play games.
Seriously. Where are our priorities?

3 Things
(2) I love Karen Carpenter. I have some of the Carpenters' music on my iPod and one of their songs just played. Yesterday Once More. A classic. Every sha la la la, every whoa oh oh still shines.
(3) Today is my Quinnie's 6th birthday and I'm not with him.

The hubby had an eye doctor conference to attend in my hometown, and we were all supposed to go. I've been so busy the past few weeks that I feel like I'm never going to catch up with all my chores. So, after asking my parents and my hubs if they would mind if I stayed home (and getting their okays), I stayed here. Sadly, that meant missing Quinn's birthday. My mom, dad, husband, daughters and son are taking him to a local Japanese restaurant (the kid LOVES the hibachi!) and he has a chocolate on chocolate (ICK) Cars cake to enjoy. I just missed waking him up and snuggling him on his 6th birthday. I'll make up for it tomorrow.

I'll be headed out to our polling place as soon as the hubby gets back from dropping the kids at school. I'm voting for John McCain, in case you were wondering. I just can't give my vote to Obama. I can't vote for a walking sound bite. Give me experienced leadership any day.

Points
I paid my 3 year-old a dollar to get out and retrieve an empty Coca Cola box from my neighbor's recycle bin so I could get the Coke Rewards points off the end of the box. She's the only one I could bribe. The other kids still have their pride, but Lillian was all over that dollar, man. She jumped at the chance to get garbage for Mommy.
That was after I filched an empty box of cereal off another neighbor's recycle pile because the box had 5 Boxtops for Education on it.

I Am a Yellow Crayon
You Are a Yellow Crayon |
![]() Your world is colored with happy, warm, fun colors. You have a thoughtful and wise way about you. Some people might even consider you a genius. Charming and eloquent, you are able to get people to do things your way. While you seem spontaneous and free wheeling, you are calculating to the extreme. Your color wheel opposite is purple. You both are charismatic leaders, but purple people act like you have no depth. |

Iced
Finally, a date appeared: opening June 10th. The anticipation just about killed me. June 10th!
My husband checked it out on Tuesday. He thought he'd pick up a dozen in place of a traditional birthday cake (he turned 37 yesterday). Being a savvy customer, he inquired about the cost of a dozen delicious cupcakes before committing to a purchase.
HA. Good thing he did.
You won't even believe me when I tell you the cost. Well, maybe you will. I don't know. I just know that it's WAAAAAAY more than I wanted to pay for a dozen of ANYTHING that I'm just going to shove down my gullet.
Check it out for yourself. The prices are listed here; scroll all the way to the bottom. Make sure you're not eating when you look, though. You might spit. I did. Then I realized that there was about 75 cents worth of cupcake on the kitchen counter, and I quickly shoved it back into my mouth. We can't be wasting when the pastries are almost as much as a gallon of gas!
They are delicious. I ate this one last night (Hubby's aunt bought a half dozen for his birthday. She appreciates the finer things because she can afford them, but even she was shocked at the cost!)

That there is a THREE DOLLAR "standard" cupcake. For THREE BUCKS I expected it to be bigger than my fist. It ain't.
Oh, and they changed their name from Upstate Cupcake to Iced. SO apropos, because that's EXACTLY how you feel after you empty your pockets inside their bakery.

4 Things on My Mind Right Now...
A lyric from Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"... Empty as a pocket with nothing to lose. Been pondering that one since early afternoon.
I hope everyone we invited comes to Aiden's party on Friday, because he only wanted to ask 5 people. I've had one RSVP.
Why does no one RSVP anymore?
I love today's quote from my "365 Ways to Wake Up Laughing" calendar. It says, "It's always better to say nothing and have people wonder about your intelligence than to say something stupid and leave them no doubt."

Objects of My Affection
Number 37 on Maggie's list of possible blog topics is "Find the objects of your affection."
At 3 a.m., the fire alarm wakes you. You realize that the house is aflame, and that you're sleeping naked. After grabbing a robe, and making sure that people and pets are out of the building, what would you search for next?
First, let me clear up some things:
(1) I do not sleep naked, so we could just skip the robe step (I might stop to put on a pair of Crocs)
(2) I think it's stupid to go back into a burning building once everyone is safe (but, hey, we're pretending, right?)
So, let me think...
(Putting on my thinking cap, drumming fingers and contemplating...)
What would I save, what would I save, what would I save?
I'm trying to visualize each room in my home, and I honestly can't think of much that I would need to grab that couldn't be replaced. There are some things that I can't buy anymore, but substitutions would be okay.
I guess I'd grab my camera. I don't go a day without documenting my family and our lives on film (well, not real film, but you get the picture... pardon the pun!)
I'd take my grandmother's measuring spoons out of the kitchen drawer and the tatting of our name that my aunt had made for me as a wedding gift (the lady who made it died awhile back...)
I'd grab the crocheted ornaments and Christmas tree skirt that my grandmother made, because those couldn't be recreated.
I'd take the cross stitch pieces I've created over the years... the stacked teacups, the "Welcome Friends" on Irish Linen that was a pain in the patoot to make, the one I did as a wedding gift to my husband, the ones I've done for the kids over the years, and the "Amazing Grace" lyrics I made for my grandmother, because that is her favorite hymn.
I'd have to take the drawer of my jewelry chest that contains all of my grandmother's costume jewelry. My sister and cousins and I always accessorized ourselves with it when we played dress up at Ma Ma Dos' house, and I took it all because I wanted it. No one but my sister asked about it, so I figured nobody else had the attachment to it that I do. I still wear pieces of it from time to time, and I always get compliments. The earrings are the "clip-on" style and hurt like heck to wear, but it just makes me feel so beautiful to wear those things of hers.
What else, what else....
I'd have to load up all those scrapbooks I've been making for the kids over the years. I really should get my rear in gear and scan all the pages and put them on disks, but life happens and leaves very little extra time to take on such a task.
Oh, I forgot about the baby blanket that my grandmother crocheted for my firstborn. She was already suffering from Alzheimer's by the time Camryn came into the world, so that blanket is so very precious to me. I don't let Camryn use it (and I need to have it framed and hung in her room...) My mom crocheted blankets for Camryn and my other three children, and those are just as special. They're all in Lillian's closet, so I wouldn't have to go far to find them if the house was burning down.
And I couldn't forget the Wii, because they're hard to come by lately, and the kids would need something to occupy their time in the shelter.
I'm really having to reach into the recesses of my brain to recall things that are special to me. I'm not a person who's really attached to possessions, 'cause I can't load up a U-Haul and hook it to the hearse when I'm gone, so this is a hard assignment. I guess there is stuff I would miss if it was gone, but right now I can't think of what those things might be.
Let's hope I never find out.

Seven Days Without Spa Treatments Makes One Weak
Seriously?
Seriously.
I've had deep tissue massages before, and afterwards I could barely get up off the table because I was so sore. 'Twasn't the case with Antoinette. I practically sprung off the table; my shoulders have never felt so tension free! All hail Antoinette! (I have committed to myself and to my husband that when school starts back up, I will be signing up for a regular monthly massage. He even noticed a difference in my back muscles when he rubbed my back the next morning.)
I guess I should explain where I was last week.
For Mother's Day I received a pre-paid spa day from my wonderful husband. When I told my sister that's what I got, she wanted to tag along (spas *are* more funner with friends or sisters!) So we signed up for a day of pampering. Needless to say, when it was all over, I wanted to move in and live at the spa.
(Children? I have children? I don't remember having any children! Go home? But THIS IS MY HOME! )
The massage was great. It was my favorite thing of the day (I shoulda probably asked to have it last...) but the Creme de la Creme facial was good, too. My skin felt as smooth as the proverbial baby's rear end when it was over. It would've been a more enjoyable experience had the "aesthetist" (as she was called) kept her trap shut during the process. The calming sounds of crickets and ocean waves were continuously interrupted by chit chat about the boyfriend, Chaz. Aesthetist and Chaz have dated, like, for four, like, years (since, like, high school) and they, like, know they, like, want to name their, like, kids, like, Grey and, like, Mallory.
LIKE, WHAT.EVER. She LIKE needed LIKE a mute button.
After our morning treatments, we were served a great lunch in the most beautiful room I've ever parked my tush in. The walls were painted in large horizontal stripes of white and off-white (which wasn't annoying as stripes can be); the curtains were a creamy white that matched the couches and large armchairs, and there was a small dining table set up near the windows. They call it the bride's room, 'cause that's where they host brides and bridesmaids that come to the spa to get pampered before the ceremony. It was absolutely luscious. I'd put a white room just like it in my house if I could guarantee it would stay white, but here, where yogurt becomes finger paint, I don't see that happening.
My sister and I went our separate ways after we ate. She got a "pampered spa pedicure" ("designed to put a little relaxation into your day. Aromatherapy bath salts, an exfoliating scrub, masques treatment and a warm paraffin treatment will condition your feet. Luxurious moisturizing massage energizes feet and soothes skin. Finish with your favorite nail color. While relaxing enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne, wine or hot tea.) Sounds nice, no?
I got to go see Raul for a haircut and color. I hadn't had either since November, and I was starting to look like a skunk with the grey hairs lining my part. Raul cleaned up the cut I'd given myself a few days prior (I put my hair in a ponytail and chopped off a good bit of it). I feel like a million bucks (well, maybe just a million pesos).
I will definitely go back to Victoria Place Salon & Spa. The girls there are not judgmental (well, they *might* be, but it doesn't show in the way they talk to you). I've been to spas before where they take one look at (overweight, stay-at-home mom, middle-income, Target clothing-clad) me and decide I'm not like one of their "usual" clients, and they spend the rest of the day looking down on me. I've also been to spas where the robe they gave me barely covered my nether regions, but Victoria Place had the best robes that actually covered most of me. I felt comfy walking around in it all day long, and I didn't have to constantly clutch and grab to keep myself covered.
It was a splendid experience, and I can't wait to repeat it. I'm thinking I really need a new holiday to celebrate so I can get another spa gift.
How about...
Happiness Happens Day (August 8)?
Best Friends Day (August 15)?
National Relaxation Day (August 15)?
Wonderful Weirdos Day (September 9)?
Wife Appreciation Day (September 15)?
Oh, no... I have it... I'll celebrate International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer (August 16).
Al Gore would be so proud!

Lost... and Found
Here's the story.
The father's words ripped me to pieces.
From http://www.independentmail.com/:
"I'm not a wealthy man. You know, some people have cars, some people have boats and lake houses and beach houses, they go on trips. I have my children, and my children are my love and they are priceless. You can’t buy what Joshua gave us for three years. We didn’t know he touched so many lives. … People see his picture and if you look in his eyes, you know only, only God could create something so beautiful. He was an angel when he was with us, and he is in Heaven now."
"We had sailed all morning,” he said. “The wind died down, so I paddled us in and we ate lunch on the shore. He ate lunch with his mommy. He played around in the water with his swimmies for a while. Then, his Mommy said ‘I think he needs a nap.’ I said ‘Let’s go sailing.’ ”
Covered in sunscreen and towels, and surrounded by cushions, the father and son went sailing, found a quiet, windless spot and Joshua went to sleep. Mr. Dorchak says a gust of wind hit the boat unexpectedly. The boat was capsized sending father
and son into the water. Mr. Dorchak says he righted the boat and the two climbed back in.
Not long after, another gust of wind hit the boat, he says.
Again, he grabbed for Joshua and put Joshua on his back. But this time Joshua, he says, was being dragged underwater.
Officials believe Joshua became entangled in the boat’s rigging which pulled him under with the boat. “I tried to hold on. I held on until I was maybe, I don’t know, it could have been five, it could have been 50-feet under water,” he says. “I wanted to go with him so badly, but I couldn’t hold my breath any longer. I saw his face drift away from me under the water. I had to come up for air.”
The grieving father says he struggles with not being able to switch places with his son.“I blame myself, to a degree. I shouldn’t but I do. I wanted to die when he went under. But, I have four other children and another on the way, and a wife who depends on me to pay the bills and to get this family back on its feet,” he said. “I have to be the Dad, and the Dad is supposed to make things right. That’s what disturbs me the most is that I couldn’t make it better.”
Say a prayer for the Dorchak family, will you?

Blog Challenge: Stream of Consciousness
Just write. Stream of conciousness. Doesn't matter if it even makes sense. Who cares if it flows. Just start. Just type whatever pops into your brain. Go. Who knows? It might turn out to be your best entry ever!
I told my son I needed to use this computer "for one thing" about 45 minutes ago (he was playing a game). I hate that when I sit down at the computer I can't do "just one thing". It always turns into more than that, but it's because I always think about something else I need to do before I get up. Yesterday I sat down on the couch and pulled the laptop into my lap around 2:30 pm. When I got up to go to the bathroom at 8 pm, I thought to myself, "I don't think I've been up off that couch since I sat down!" and truly, I don't think I got up in 5.5 hours. Granted, it was a lazy Sunday, and I had gotten up earlier than normal to cook Father's Day breakfast for my husband, so I caught a quick catnap in those 5.5 hours, but still. That's a long time to be on the couch.
Quinn is screaming. He's always screaming about something, or making someone else scream. I wish my kids could just be nice to each other. I get glowing reports from all of their teachers about how sweet they are with their friends, so why do they come home and torture their siblings?!? And why oh why does my older daughter feel like she has to be in charge? Just now she took control of a situation I should've handled, and that's why Quinn is screaming. If she had said, "Mommy! I need you!" I could've come over and settled the problem, but she (I guess trying to help?) played the mom and handled it (albeit the wrong way). I guess that comes from being the oldest. She's quite bossy, and that's her trait I dislike the most.
I feel guilty about Father's Day. My husband always goes above and beyond the call of duty when it's Mother's Day. He shows me a wonderful day, because he knows my love language is gifts. I love giving gifts, and I love getting them, and he gets that. His love language is acts of service, so I try to have the garbage emptied, dishes and laundry done and bed made when he gets home from work, because that's how I can show my love to him the most. That makes gift-giving occasions hard, though, because he's not big on gifts. I cannot match monetarily what he gives me, because I don't have the resources he has, and I feel funny dipping into our joint account for his gifts, even though he wouldn't care. I just feel like it should come out of my earnings for some reason, so I can't ever match what he does for me. As a result, I feel like my Father's Day offerings were lame. I made him a hardback photo book at YorkPhoto.com using a bunch of pictures of him with the kids throughout the years. I paired it with lots of great quotes about being a father and what that means. It was the kind of gift I'd love to get, because I love any kind of gift that expresses feelings (my 2nd love language is Words of Encouragement). I loved the book, and he said he did, too, so I guess it was okay. It's hard to buy for him, because if he wants something, he just buys it for himself. Plus, I don't know a lot about buying computer peripherals or tools, so I skip those gifts, which are his favorites. Anyway... he got the photo book and some new polo shirts (which he always needs) and some Spam singles ('cause he loves Spam and these are great because they're individual servings of Spam that can go anywhere!) That was it. Today is his birthday, and we're heading to his favorite lunch place to buy a gift card so he can have lunch on us, plus we're picking up an ice cream birthday cake in his favorite flavor (Bruster's Foreign Affair), because he adores ice cream cake. We're also having lunch with him at a restaurant hear his work. That'll have to do, because I'm out of ideas. I hope it's good enough, but I always feel like I fall short when it comes to giving him gifts.
I guess I need to go get dressed and officially start my day. I did make pancakes for the kids this morning and used up the last of the Bisquick, so I need to get some more of that. I actually like when I use the last of something. It gives me a sense of accomplishment. Currently I'm trying to clean out my freezer and pantry and concentrate on eating at home more. Every time I use up something or throw away a box, I get giddy. There are so many Dream Dinners and bags of chicken in my freezer, and they need to be cooked and eaten. My pantry is about half as full as it was when we moved in over a year ago, and I'm making a conscious effort to only buy necessities instead of going crazy during a good sale. Good sales and triple coupons are the reasons I have 3 boxes of taco shells in my pantry right now. I gave away a box full of canned goods when the postal service had their canned food drive a couple of months ago. That helped a lot. I love a good sale, even at the grocery store, but I'm awful about following up and actually using all the food. To help, I've started making meal plans so I know each night what I'm going to make. That has helped tremendously. I can't wait until the freezer and pantry are near empty! Then I'll make an inventory and try to be more organized. I know. You think I'm mental. (And I'm blogging about my pantry, so I'm sure you're drooling on your keyboard. WAKE UP!)
'K. Now I really need to go get dressed and give Aiden this computer back so he can finish his "duties" at Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends on CartoonNetwork.com.

Sweet & Sour
Every night since June 8 I have sat and watched the local news, hoping to hear that the little boy's body has been found. Every night I shake my head in disbelief as it's reported that the search continues. I could not, WOULD not sleep if I knew my baby's body was in the lake. I hope the search doesn't end. I want them to find that boy's body, because I know his daddy sees the last look on his son's face in his nightmares. I'm sure he replays his actions again and again... "If only I had done something differently..." I know that's what I would do. It would haunt me.
I so want closure for that family. I pray for it each and every day.
Meanwhile, I read this article just a few minutes ago.
While my heart is heavy for the local boy's family, I know the family of the little Michigan girl is rejoicing that she was found alive. Hallelujah! What a miracle!

Two things
Hint to Stacy: in "Fergalicious" when will.i.am spells "tasty" he adds an unnecessary "e", so eviDENTly you can't spell as well as you thought, "dutchess" (yeah, that's spelled wrong, too, dear.)
(2) When you have your sunroof open, don't try to clean your windshield if you're going 50+ mph. You will get wet.
** That last comment is for anyone, not just Fergie. I'm pretty sure that (a) she's driven wherever she goes so she doesn't have to worry about cleaning the windshield and (b) she does not read this blog.

All I needed was raisins!
Yesterday, bless his heart, all he wanted for lunch was a bowl of oatmeal. I was ecstatic that he was asking for food, so darn it, I was going to make whatever he wanted!
Oatmeal! Sure! Comin' right up, sunshine!
I made the first bowl. Blech. It was awful. Too runny. I didn't even serve it to him.
The second bowl was much better. I added the butter and the sugar and the milk and the cinnamon and.... raisins? Oh, heavenly day. We cannot be out of raisins! Mama's boy needs his iron!
My 4 year-old, who basically blames his baby sister for everything, piped up.
"Lillian ate all duh waisins."
I knew that wasn't true, but before I could correct him, Aiden had run over and popped Lillian for "eating all duh waisins". (Fever and hunger make a boy mean, evidently.)
So, I had to punish my sweet, sickly boy for hurting his sister. Nothing like a red-faced, crying, feverish boy to make a mommy feel doggone *wonderful*.
I dug and dug and finally found one tiny snack-sized box of raisins in the pantry. Thank God for small miracles.
After lunch I sent my hubby a text message. "We need raisins."
His response, "Let's go to BJs."
Folks, the man works at a freakin' Wal Mart SuperCenter, where there are raisins aplenty, but he wants to drag 4 children, 2 of which are knocking on death's door, across town to the warehouse club.
I suspect that my husband has an IQ approaching genius, but sometimes I wonder about his everyday thinkin' skills.
(But I LOVE me some BJs, so I was rarin' to go. When a girl ain't been outside of her 4 walls for a week, BJs and a trip to Perkins for supper sounds like heaven.)
I had to bribe the sick kids to go to BJs by promising them a trip to a local toy store to purchase Webkinz (side note: these little furdevils are the techno version of Beanie Babies, and we all know how much those are worth these days...), so they agreed to go.
We had a list of about 10 things to buy. We only put 4 of those things in our buggy, but surprisingly, our total bill was in the $250+ range.
All I needed was raisins.
In addition we came home with a 5 pound bag of frozen flounder, 2 Bathroom Reader books, a flat of Coca Cola (in glass bottles! Be still my heart!), a can containing 100 Slim Jims, 10 pounds of ground sirloin, 3 pounds of bananas, 2 beef tenderloins, a box of Bisquick that would make the world's largest pancake, a megapack of Lunchables, a 10-pack of Chap Stick, Splenda, some kids' Tylenol, some Delsym (world's best cough medicine!), milk, eggs, grapes, 6 boxes of cereal, a flat of Danish, a dozen huge muffins and assorted other things you can't resist buying because they come in GI-FREAKIN-NORMOUS boxes.
(I apologize for using FREAKIN' twice in one blog. Forgive me.)
Why is that? Just because it comes in a box the size of my refrigerator, I feel compelled to buy it. I don't see myself wanting to fill my cart with a dozen boxes of cereal at the regular grocery store; I restrain myself from buying a 14 pounds of dry spaghetti on a regular grocery trip, but at BJs, I can't control myself. LOAD 'ER UP.
Methinks if I quit buying in BULK, I'd quit eating in BULK.
ALL
WE
NEEDED
WERE
RAISINS.
