$128,050,000

Listed below are all of the college football bowls that will be taking place over the next few weeks, plus the payout offered for each bowl. It all adds up to $128,050,000.

That is a disgusting number. For football. It turns my stomach.

So many people in financial trouble. An auto industry about to go bankrupt. The average American being told to "dig a little deeper" for charities this year, yet there are millions being shelled out for college football teams to come play games.

Seriously. Where are our priorities?

It does seem absurd the amount of money that is paid but I try to see the positive. It goes to the universities to give the scholarhips so athletes can get their education.

B, I know that, which is why it disgusts me even more when an athlete leaves before graduation or doesn't even get a degree... just goes on to the pros. IMO, if they do that, they should have to pay back all the scholarship money. Plus, there are so many other deserving non-athletes out there. I wonder how much of it goes to beautify or enlarge the stadiums, or to equip the locker rooms, etc.?

Don't forget that all the money shelled out to attend these events also greatly supports local economies, many of whom are in desperate need for money. I agree that it's a huge sum of money, but I'd love it if UAB were reaping some of those profits. We could use any influx of cash we can get our hands on. Also, think of all the people that may be employed by one game alone. The money seems much smaller with all that taken into account. Not small, but more palatable.

I totally agree with you Beth. I think there needs to be some regulations on the scholarships and when they leave early. I do know that Ohio State that the revenues from the football program help fund some of the less popular sports. It's all a vicious cycle-large payouts to pay for scholarships to build the best facilities to recruit the best athletes to win championships and it starts all over again. *sigh*
